Writing emails in Spanish – How to do it

Writing emails in Spanish - How to do it

If your work requires talking with suppliers, colleagues, or customers from Spanish-speaking countries, this article will come in handy!

Writing emails is a great way to practice and improve your Spanish professional skills, and it’s way easier than making calls because you will have more time to think and construct the message you want to send.

As in English or any other language, you will use different degrees of formality depending on who you are writing to.

In this article, you will learn both!

Before we start, remember in Spanish, we use two different pronouns for “YOU.”

Usted = Formal
Tu = Informal

This is important since some of the phrases you will use in the message might include possessive adjectives like “tu” (informal) or “su” (informal), which translate to ‘your’ in English, or the indirect objects like “te” (informal) or “le” (informal) which mean ‘to you.’

How to start an email in Spanish?

Spanish speakers, especially Latinamericans’, are very friendly even in formal environments. It’s important for us always to send warm greetings to start your emails.

This part varies depending on what your email is about. But here are some guidelines to help you write an outstanding email in Spanish:

Advice

  • Try to use formal language (you = usted) unless you already know the person and are sure it’s ok to hold informal conversations with them.
  • Don’t use slang, idiom, or abbreviations.
  • Use conditionals; it will help you be polite and friendly at the same time.
